The Fulshear Police Department will collect unused and expired prescription medications for free on Saturday, Oct. 24, at 6639 W. Cross Creek Bend Lane.

The drop-off runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. as part of the Drug Enforcement Administration's (DEA) National Prescription Drug Take Back Day, a twice-yearly program that sets up collection sites at law enforcement agencies across the country. The Fulshear Police Department announced the event on Facebook, calling on residents to "clean out those medicine cabinets."

The department, led by interim Police Chief David Gott since the Fulshear City Council appointed him Oct. 13, will staff the collection site. No appointment, fee or paperwork is required. Participation is anonymous and no questions will be asked, according to the event listing.

The event is open to residents of Fulshear and surrounding communities, including Cross Creek Ranch and nearby Fort Bend County neighborhoods, according to My Neighborhood News.

What to bring — and what to leave home

The department will accept:

  • Prescription tablets and capsules
  • Prescription patches
  • Other solid prescription medications
  • Vaping devices and cartridges, with lithium batteries removed

Items not accepted include liquid medications, syringes, needles and other sharps, and vaping devices with batteries still installed. Residents with liquids or sharps should seek a separate disposal program for those materials.

National scope

The DEA's website shows the national program collected 642,410 pounds of medications during its April 2026 event alone. Since the program began, collection sites have taken in more than 10,500 tons nationwide.

Flushing old pills can introduce pharmaceutical substances into waterways, and tossing them in household trash can create opportunities for accidental exposure, according to the event listing published by My Neighborhood News.

Katy ISD also collecting

Fulshear's event is not the only local option. The Katy ISD Police Department will also host a Take Back Day collection on Oct. 24 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Katy ISD Law Enforcement Center, 20370 Franz Road in Katy, according to My Neighborhood News.

Residents who cannot attend either event can search for additional collection sites at dea.gov/takebackday.
