New officers join the Katy Police Department at a swearing-in ceremony Monday, Oct. 19, at the department's Franz Road headquarters.
The ceremony runs from 4 to 5 p.m. at 5456 Franz Road, according to a city notice certified Oct. 14 by City Secretary Becky L. McGrew. A quorum of the Katy City Council may attend, though the notice states no formal council action will be taken.
The city has not disclosed how many officers will be sworn in or their names.
The department held a similar swearing-in ceremony on May 4 at the same location. That ceremony also drew a possible council quorum, according to a separate city notice certified April 30.
Monday's ceremony comes as the department prepares for growth. Police Chief Byron Woytek told Covering Katy during an August budget workshop that the department was in the early stages of planning a new police substation at Texas Heritage Marketplace.
"Right now, we're just starting to work on the drawings and the diagrams, how big this space needs to be," Woytek said at the workshop.
The substation is part of the city's proposed $90 million budget. The police department's share accounts for $16.4 million of a proposed $68.7 million general fund, which represents a 14.7% increase over the current $59.9 million general fund, Covering Katy reported.
On Thursday, Oct. 22, the department hosts its next Coffee with a Cop event from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. at the McDonald's at 5701 Highway Blvd. The department describes the program as a chance to "join your neighbors and police officers for coffee and conversation," according to its events page.
Also on Oct. 22, Harris County Precinct 4's office is hosting a Senior Resource Fair at the Katy Fussell Center, 5370 E. 5th St., from 1 to 4 p.m. The fair will connect older adults and their families with organizations offering health, financial, legal and safety resources, according to a post from the precinct office.
