Two suspects stole a box truck that a Katy-area nonprofit uses to deliver food and collect Christmas gifts for children, according to KHOU.

The truck belongs to Hope Chest Resale, a resale market with locations in Cypress and Katy that helps fund the nonprofit Cy-Hope. Surveillance video captured two people breaking through a gate early Tuesday, Oct. 13, and driving off with the vehicle.

Jennifer Donovan, director of Hope Chest Resale, described the theft to KHOU. She said the suspects spent about 30 minutes rummaging through scrap materials before taking the truck. The box truck is fully wrapped with Hope Chest's name and logo.

In 2026, the truck helped deliver more than 23,000 pounds of food through monthly food drives, Donovan told KHOU. It also picks up donated Christmas gifts, including bicycles, for children who might otherwise go without presents.

"And so the fact that somebody would take advantage of a nonprofit that's trying to do good and help people is very disappointing," Donovan said.

The theft hits at a difficult moment. Donovan said 2026 has been tough for nonprofits, with both individual and corporate giving down.

Hope Chest Resale helps fund Cy-Hope through a portion of its sales, along with private donations, grants and community support. Cy-Hope provides after-school programs, baseball, tutoring, counseling and other services to families across the Cy-Fair ISD area, where nearly 60% of families face economic challenges, according to the organization's website.

The box truck also handles large-item donation pickups for the resale market's regular operations, according to Hope Chest's website.

Hope Chest is asking anyone who recognizes the vehicles seen in the surveillance footage to come forward. Two vehicles appeared on camera: a standard-size truck and the stolen box truck.

Hope Chest plans to share a box truck from its other location to keep services running. Donovan told KHOU the organization remains hopeful the truck will be recovered in working condition.
