Katy-area residents ages 14 and older can decorate sugar skulls at the Cinco Ranch Branch Library on Monday, Sept. 28. The event is part of Fort Bend County Libraries' Hispanic Heritage Month programming across seven branches.

The "Sugar Skulls" program runs from 5 to 6:30 p.m. in the library's Conference Classroom at 2620 Commercial Center Blvd. Participants will learn about Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) and decorate their own calaveras de azúcar using icing, colorful foil, sprinkles and sequins, according to the Katy Times.

The event is one piece of a system-wide Hispanic Heritage Month lineup that Fort Bend County Libraries is hosting from Sept. 15 through Oct. 15. Seven branches are participating: Cinco Ranch, George Memorial, First Colony, Mission Bend, Missouri City, Sugar Land and University, according to the library system's website. Programs include craft workshops, a virtual author talk and live performances.

Two other programs take place before the Sept. 28 event. Multi-Latin Grammy Award-winning musician and children's author Lucky Diaz leads a virtual author talk about his bilingual picture book "Paletero Man" on Thursday, Sept. 24, with an English session at 6 p.m. and a Spanish session at 7 p.m. Diaz made history as the first North American children's artist to win a Latin Grammy. On Saturday, Sept. 26, the First Colony Branch Library at 2121 Austin Parkway in Sugar Land hosts a Mini Piñata craft program at 2 p.m. Registration is required. Call 281-238-2800 for details.

The library system's signature Hispanic Heritage Month celebration takes place Saturday, Oct. 3, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Sienna Branch Library, 8411 Sienna Springs Blvd. in Missouri City. Program coordinators with Fort Bend County Libraries' Outreach, Partnerships, and Programming Department said the event will feature art, dance, poetry, storytelling, hands-on activities and local performers.
