The Tompkins Falcons girls cross country team edged The Woodlands by two points to win the varsity team title at the Seven Lakes Showcase on Saturday, Sept. 12.

The victory gave Tompkins a perfect 4-0 record across its first four meets of the season. Bailey Pipes led the Falcons, setting a new course record, school record and personal best at the annual invitational held at Seven Lakes High School, 9251 South Fry Road. The previous course record of 17:42.8 was set by Tompkins' Rowan Saacke in 2023, according to meet records.

The Woodlands won the varsity boys team title. Foster High School's Cooper McGraner finished second overall with a time of 15:15, which the Foster Boys Cross Country program called the third-fastest time in meet history. The run also broke McGraner's own Foster school 5K record.

The boys course record entering the meet stood at 15:12.90, set by Theo Goff of Oak Ridge in 2016. Elton Martin also set a personal best and course record at the meet, according to Texas MileSplit.

The meet featured six divisions, starting with the varsity boys Derks Memorial 5K at 7:15 a.m. and the varsity girls Derks Memorial 5K at 7:35 a.m. JV, freshman and open divisions followed through the morning. Seven Lakes coaches Scott Kenney and Alyssa Crocker hosted the event.

Katy ISD Athletics praised the turnout on X, calling it "a huge number of Katy ISD student-athletes competing and contributing to a successful morning."

The varsity 5K races carry the name of Gary Derks, a track and field coach who worked in the Houston area for more than 30 years before his death on May 25, 2016. The Katy ISD Board of Trustees named a portion of the Cinco Ranch High School track facility in his honor in September 2024, the Katy Times reported.
