A new boutique marketplace opens Saturday, Sept. 5, at 6729 South Fry Road in Katy. The Collective Boutiques will fill the Cinco Ranch storefront left empty when Painted Tree Boutiques shut down in April.
The company, which is separate from Painted Tree, plans to soft open with roughly 150 vendor booths, according to vendor PamelaKay Designs, who posted on Facebook that the space could eventually hold around 300. A grand opening is set for Saturday, Oct. 3.
Vendor move-ins began Aug. 26, My Neighborhood News reported. The company's website lists 12 locations nationwide, including Cinco Ranch, Kingwood and four other Texas stores.
The opening carries extra weight for vendors who lost their retail spaces when Painted Tree ceased operations April 14. The chain had more than 60 locations nationwide, including six in the Houston area, Covering Katy reported.
Vendors received no warning before an email told them the company had shut down immediately, giving them roughly 10 days to remove inventory. Painted Tree and 64 subsidiaries filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy April 28. Many vendors also reported they were never paid for their final weeks of sales, according to Covering Katy.
Nancy Wilden, owner of the Artisan Craft Boutique at 119 FM 1463 in Katy, told Covering Katy about the scene after Painted Tree closed: "They were in shock and searching for a place where they could sell. They didn't even get paid."
At least one former Painted Tree vendor is returning to the exact same spot. The Red Angel Boutique announced on Facebook that it signed a one-year lease at The Collective Boutiques Cinco Ranch in Space E4, the same space it occupied under Painted Tree.
The business model works like this: independent shop owners rent space and pay a flat 10% commission on gross sales. The Collective handles staffing, checkout, payment processing, sales-tax collection and marketing. Owners stock and design their own displays but do not have to be in the store during business hours, according to the company.
The store is on South Fry Road near the Grand Parkway. The Collective Boutiques' soft opening is Sept. 5, with the full grand opening following Oct. 3.
