Katy ISD is urging residents to clear unused prescription drugs from their medicine cabinets by dropping them at a collection site on Saturday, Oct. 24, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The district posted the event details on X on Oct. 3, directing families to search for a nearby drop-off location at DEATakeBack.com. The post is part of the Drug Enforcement Administration's National Prescription Drug Take Back Day, a twice-yearly program that gives residents a no-questions-asked way to dispose of unwanted medications.

Katy ISD did not name a specific local collection site in its post. In past years, the Katy ISD Police Department has hosted a drop-off at its station. After the October 2024 event, the department reported collecting more than 20 boxes of unwanted, expired or unused prescription drugs.

Fulshear Police Department has also served as a drop-off location in previous years. The department hosted a site at 6639 W. Cross Creek Bend Lane for the October 2023 event. Neither department has publicly confirmed a 2026 collection site as of Oct. 4.

The DEA program aims to reduce the potential for prescription drug abuse by removing unused medications from homes, according to the agency's take-back page. Nationally, the program has collected more than 21 million pounds of unwanted medications since it began.

At the most recent event in April 2026, more than 4,300 law enforcement agencies operated roughly 4,400 collection sites and gathered 642,410 pounds of drugs across the country.

Residents can search by zip code or city at DEATakeBack.com to find confirmed local collection locations as the event date approaches. Those who cannot make it on Oct. 24 can use year-round authorized pharmaceutical disposal sites listed on the DEA's website.
