Lamar Consolidated ISD told families Monday, Aug. 31, that false information generated by artificial intelligence tools was circulating online, wrongly claiming the district would close schools for Tropical Storm Edouard.
The claims were false. All 50 Lamar CISD campuses, including Fulshear High School, opened on regular schedules Tuesday, Sept. 1.
The district, led by Superintendent Dr. Roosevelt Nivens, posted the warning on its official X account. Lamar CISD said it was aware of inaccurate, AI-generated information claiming the district would be closed and called those claims false. The post urged families to check the district's own channels before trusting outside sources.
The clarification came as Tropical Storm Edouard moved toward the upper Texas coast. The National Hurricane Center upgraded the system to a tropical storm Monday evening. By early Tuesday, Edouard carried maximum sustained winds of 40 mph, moving west-northwest toward the Texas-Louisiana border, Newsweek reported. The National Weather Service forecast rainfall rates exceeding 3 to 4 inches per hour in the strongest rain bands, with totals of 3 to 6 inches across parts of the region and localized amounts up to 9 inches.
The storm's projected track kept its worst conditions east of the Houston metro area, according to Houston Public Media. Most areas east of I-45, including Harris and Galveston counties, fell under a flood watch from 1 a.m. Tuesday until 7 a.m. Wednesday.
Several districts closer to the storm's path did cancel classes Tuesday. KPRC reported closures at Crosby ISD, Galena Park ISD, Humble ISD, Channelview ISD, Goose Creek CISD, Huffman ISD, Anahuac ISD, Dayton ISD, Tarkington ISD and Sheldon ISD. Lamar CISD, which serves 46,786 students in the Rosenberg-Fulshear corridor west of Houston, was not among them.
As we reported Sept. 1, the Katy and Fulshear area faced lower flood risk from Edouard than communities farther east.
The district directed families to its website at lcisd.org, its X account (@LamarCISD) and the ParentSquare messaging platform for future weather updates.
