A woman died after her motorcycle rear-ended a tractor-trailer on Interstate 10 westbound near Mason Road around midnight Thursday, Sept. 3.
The crash happened in the 2200 block of I-10 westbound, the Harris County Sheriff's Office (HCSO) said. KPRC 2 reported that the woman was traveling westbound when she struck the rear of a tractor-trailer moving in the same direction.
The impact separated the woman from her motorcycle. Emergency medical services responded and pronounced her dead at the scene.
HCSO investigators believe the woman failed to control her speed, which they identified as the primary cause of the crash.
The victim had not been identified as of Thursday morning. Deputy Chagoya of the Harris County Sheriff's Office is leading the investigation, which remains open.
Speed has been a persistent factor in Texas traffic deaths. A TxDOT spokesperson said in a July 30 email to the Katy Times that speeding "is the number one contributing factor in traffic crashes in Texas and accounts for roughly one-third of all traffic fatalities statewide." In 2025, more than 150,000 speed-related crashes occurred in Texas, killing 1,247 people and seriously injuring 5,652 others, according to TxDOT.
That statement came as TxDOT brought its "Be Safe. Drive Smart" speeding awareness campaign to the Buc-ee's parking lot at 27700 Katy Freeway on July 24. The campaign ran alongside Operation Slowdown, a statewide high-visibility speed enforcement effort that lasted through Aug. 2.
