Fort Bend County Judge Daniel Wong personally delivered $1,000 in school supplies to each of 11 teachers the week of Aug. 10, stocking their classrooms before the first day of school across the Katy and Fulshear area.

Wong announced the Back to School Classroom Supply Drive on his X account on Sunday, Aug. 9, then posted individual recognitions for each teacher on Monday, Aug. 10, and Tuesday, Aug. 11. He said he purchased the supplies himself. That's $11,000 total.


Wong said in a Facebook video posted Aug. 11 that he wanted to help teachers get their classrooms ready with the new school year starting that week, adding that he personally bought $1,000 in supplies for each honored educator to give them and their students a strong start.

The honored educators span early childhood, literacy, Special Education, Title I, theatre and sixth-grade instruction. Among them:

  • Mark Salazar, recognized for his creativity and impactful work as a Title I educator
  • Alana Servantes, commended for her resilience and contributions to Special Education
  • Rihana Sheikh, honored for her dedication to literacy, character development and academic excellence
  • Marcela Diaz, commended for 24 years of service in Special Education
  • Maria Eisenhour, recognized for 12 years of devoted service
  • Benjamin Steinert, acknowledged for a decade of academic leadership and contributions to Fort Bend ISD
  • Keshonda Johnson, honored for her commitment to student-centered learning
  • Mekol Gabel, acknowledged for her leadership in sixth-grade education
  • Juanita Salazar, honored for her dedication to theatre education

Two additional teachers were recognized but not individually named in Wong's posts.

The timing lined up with the start of the school year. Fort Bend ISD students returned Tuesday, Aug. 11, and Katy ISD's first day was Wednesday, Aug. 12. Fort Bend County encompasses both Fulshear and portions of the greater Katy area, meaning several of the honored teachers serve students in local neighborhoods.

Wong's Facebook video of the presentations had drawn more than 5,800 views and 105 reactions by Wednesday, Aug. 12.
