Houston Methodist broke ground Wednesday, Oct. 7, on a $10 million emergency care center at 29133 Katy Freeway in west Katy.
The 11,150-square-foot facility will house 10 exam rooms, X-ray services, CT imaging and a laboratory. It will be staffed around the clock by an emergency room physician, nurses, a radiology technician and an on-call ultrasound technician. The Houston Methodist Katy Emergency Care Center is expected to open in summer 2027.
Construction is already ahead of the ceremony. Underground utilities are in, the concrete slab is poured and structural steel is rising, according to Covering Katy News, which first reported the groundbreaking.
"And goodness knows, the traffic around here can sometimes create those issues for everybody," Houston Methodist President and CEO Marc L. Boom said at the ceremony, noting that the center expands access to emergency care when every minute matters.
Wade Johnson, vice president and project executive for general contractor O'Donnell/Snider Construction, said crews poured the slab the week before the ceremony and erected structural steel in the two days leading up to it.
Katy's westernmost emergency room
Carl Little, CEO of Houston Methodist West Hospital, said the facility will be Houston Methodist's westernmost emergency room before reaching Columbus. In April, Houston Methodist opened a 67,000-square-foot comprehensive care center in Cinco Ranch. That facility focuses on primary and specialty care, while the new Katy center is dedicated to emergency services.
The emergency center sits in Katy's extraterritorial jurisdiction (ETJ), outside the city limits, though it carries a Katy mailing address. Katy city officials attended the groundbreaking, and the city posted a notice of possible quorum for the event.
Texas Heritage Marketplace build-out
The emergency center joins a wave of commercial openings at Texas Heritage Marketplace, an approximately $400 million, 750,000-square-foot-plus mixed-use development on 165 acres at I-10 and Texas Heritage Parkway. Houston-based NewQuest is the developer.
Lowe's opened Sept. 4. Target's new Katy Heritage store is scheduled to open Sunday, Oct. 11, at 29355 Katy Freeway, according to My Neighborhood News. Sam's Club is under construction with a targeted early 2027 opening. Other announced tenants include Academy Sports + Outdoors, Burlington, Ulta Beauty, Spec's and EoS Fitness.
The City of Katy also plans a combined fire and police substation on Heritage Oak Lane near I-10 and Texas Heritage Parkway. Funding was approved in the city's $90.5 million fiscal year 2026–27 budget, adopted Monday, Sept. 28.
The emergency care center's summer 2027 target puts it on a similar timeline as the next phase of marketplace retail.
