Fort Bend County Judge Daniel Wong is warning Katy and Fulshear residents to delete unsolicited text messages claiming they owe money on a Fort Bend toll road.
The Fort Bend County Toll Road Authority has confirmed the texts are fraudulent, Wong said on X on Friday, Aug. 21.
"Don't click unsolicited texts claiming you owe a Fort Bend toll," Wong wrote from his official county account.
Katy and Fulshear drivers use the Grand Parkway and other Fort Bend toll roads daily. The FBCTRA was the first toll agency in the country to move to all-electronic collection, meaning every Fort Bend toll road requires a valid electronic toll tag rather than cash payment. That makes toll-related texts seem plausible to recipients, even when they are fake.
How to protect yourself
The toll authority does not send payment demands by text. Residents who receive a suspicious message should not click any links in it.
Anyone who needs to verify a legitimate toll violation or make a payment can do so through the authority's official customer service portal at fbtrcsc.com. The FBCTRA's main website, fbctra.com, also has a section for drivers who believe they are being charged incorrectly.
Fort Bend County has not published a dedicated local reporting contact for this specific scam. The county judge's warning did not include details about what the fraudulent texts look like or how many residents have received them.
