Katy-area teens and adults looking for help with FAFSA applications, resume writing or career planning can walk into three local Harris County Public Library branches this month and get free one-on-one guidance through the library system's FutureU program.

FutureU pairs patrons with an advisor who can help with college preparation, career development and job-search basics like cover letters and interview skills. The program is open to anyone with a library card, not just high school students, making it a resource for career changers and adult learners as well.

The library system, led by Director Edward Melton, operates 31 branches countywide. Three serve the Katy area, and all three are offering FutureU services in August, according to the program's August newsletter:

  • Katy Branch Library, 5414 Franz Road, Katy, TX 77493. Phone: (281) 391-3509.
  • Katherine Tyra Branch Library @ Bear Creek, 16719 Clay Road, Houston, TX 77084. Phone: (832) 927-5590.
  • Maud Smith Marks Branch Library, 1815 Westgreen Boulevard, Katy, TX 77450. Phone: (832) 927-7860.

Walk-in sessions and virtual appointments are both available. HCPL describes FutureU as a free service guiding patrons toward college readiness, career development and personal growth. Services are bilingual, offered in English and Spanish.

Specific session dates and times vary by branch. Residents can check the HCPL events calendar or call their local branch for the August schedule.

The Katy Branch Library is also hosting a "Mastering Your Interview" workshop on Thursday, Aug. 6, from 5 to 6 p.m., a standalone career-prep event that complements the FutureU offerings.

HCPL's broader free education programs include Career Online High School scholarships for adults seeking an accredited diploma, ESL classes, citizenship classes and adult literacy tutoring.
