Hope Chest Resale has its stolen box truck back, but the Katy nonprofit is stuck with a $1,300 impound bill and a stolen radio after the recovery.
The truck, taken from the Hope Chest parking lot on Stockdick School Road on Oct. 13, is now in the organization's possession, KHOU first reported.
"We are so relieved to have our box truck back!" Hope Chest Resale said in a social media post, according to KHOU.
The nonprofit said it cannot share many details about how the truck was found because an investigation remains ongoing. No suspects have been publicly named or charged.
Hope Chest Resale, which operates under the umbrella of Cy-Hope, uses the truck for daily store operations, monthly food deliveries and collecting donated toys and gifts during the holiday season. The vehicle helped deliver more than 23,000 pounds of food through monthly drives in 2026, KHOU reported.
Jennifer Donovan, director of Hope Chest Resale, said before the truck was recovered that the theft came at a difficult time. She said individual and corporate giving have both been down in 2026.
The truck also picks up donated Christmas gifts, including bicycles for children who might not otherwise receive presents.
As we reported Oct. 18, Cy-Hope launched a $60,000 Box Truck Fund to buy a replacement vehicle and outfit it with a new wrap. The nonprofit had said that even if the stolen truck were recovered, missing parts or damage could require significant repairs. Whether the fund will continue, be adjusted or close now that the truck is back has not been announced.
Surveillance video captured two people breaking through a gate at the locked parking lot early on Oct. 13. The thieves then spent about 30 minutes out of camera view rummaging through scrap materials before driving off, Donovan told KHOU.
Hope Chest's Katy store at 6545 Stockdick School Road opened in January 2023, joining the original Cypress location. The two stores contributed about $2 million to Cy-Hope's programs in 2024, with volunteers logging more than 25,000 hours, according to the nonprofit's annual report.
Residents who want to support the nonprofit can visit the Cy-Hope Box Truck Fund page or call the Katy store at 832-916-4585.
