Katy residents will pay 81 cents more per month for trash and recycling pickup starting Sept. 1 after the City Council unanimously approved a contract extension with Texas Pride Disposal.
The council voted Monday, Aug. 10, to raise the monthly residential rate from $16.85 to $17.66, a 4.8% increase. The action was part of a three-year contract extension running through Aug. 31, 2029, with options for two additional one-year renewals, according to Covering Katy News.
Future annual rate adjustments will be tied to changes in the Consumer Price Index. Charges for small commercial services and extra carts stay the same, according to Community Impact.
As Covering Katy News reported on Aug. 18, Councilmember Paula Taylor told colleagues at the meeting that the locked-in rate protects residents from fuel-cost swings.
"The increase for citizens will be about 81 cents a month, and if you think about the price of fuel and the potential price of fuel, to have that rate locked in for the next year I think is a great thing for our citizens," Taylor said.
Texas Pride has provided Katy's residential service since 2020, when it replaced Republic Services. The new $17.66 rate remains below the $17.87 residents were paying under the previous hauler when that contract ended.
2027 downtown events calendar locked in
At the same meeting, council approved what the agenda labeled the 2027 street-closure schedule for events at the historic downtown square, according to the Katy Times. Katy Exchange events are set for March 27, April 24, May 22, June 26, Aug. 28, Nov. 13 and Dec. 4. Signature city events are scheduled for March 13, April 10, May 8, June 12, Aug. 7, Sept. 18 and Nov. 6.
Other council action
Council also approved:
- A special use permit for First Baptist Church of Katy to occupy a former auto shop at 5458 Roberts Road, a 1.33-acre site.
- The appointment of Rebecca Suzanne Follis to the Convention and Tourism Bureau.
- Appointments of Adrienne Davitz, Myra Kay Jones, Marilyn Frishman and Jerrilyn Rheman to the Katy Heritage Park Board.
All items passed unanimously on the consent agenda.
