Katy Taylor beat Seven Lakes 31-17 on Friday, Oct. 9, pushing the Mustangs to 5-2 overall and 3-2 in District 22-6A play.

The win marks Taylor's second straight district victory and keeps the Mustangs in the thick of the 22-6A playoff race. One year ago, Taylor finished 0-10, the program's first winless season since 1980, when the school opened.

That streak is over.

Second-year head coach Chris Babin's squad piled up 359 total yards against the Spartans, splitting the production almost evenly between the air and the ground. Taylor posted 185 passing yards and 174 rushing yards, according to MaxPreps.

Junior quarterback Logan Broome has been the engine of Taylor's turnaround. In the Mustangs' Week 6 win over Cinco Ranch, Broome went 13-for-17 for 107 yards and a touchdown through the air while rushing for 136 yards and two scores on 15 carries, as the Houston Chronicle reported.

Taylor beat Cinco Ranch 36-13 on Thursday, Oct. 1 before handling Seven Lakes, giving the Mustangs back-to-back wins after district losses to Tompkins (12-29) and Jordan (6-45) in September.

Seven Lakes, coached by Jimmy Hamon, dropped to 0-6 overall and 0-4 in district. The Spartans have been outscored in every league game this season, falling to Morton Ranch (28-43), Paetow (10-41) and Katy (0-55) before the Taylor loss.

Babin, who came to Taylor after serving as defensive coordinator at Jordan, has the Mustangs chasing their first postseason trip since 2023. Taylor has qualified for the playoffs just 13 times in 46 varsity seasons. The Chronicle noted that a Taylor playoff berth could push Katy into the UIL Division I bracket because Katy's enrollment is larger than Tompkins' and Taylor's.
