Katy City Park has finished a $2.36 million renovation that includes a new multipurpose turf field, tackling a surface that got muddy after rain.

The project at 5720 Franz Road also added four pickleball courts, sports field lighting, fencing and drainage improvements, Community Impact Newspaper reported when Katy City Council approved the work at its April 28, 2025, meeting. The turf field accommodates football and soccer.

Katy Magazine reported the completed renovation on Sept. 7, describing the turf as a upgrade that will make playing at the park more fun and less muddy after rain.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony for the multipurpose field was scheduled for June 18, according to a City of Katy notice. No post-event confirmation was available.

Katy Parks and Recreation Director Kevin Browne had projected a summer 2026 finish when the council approved the project. "Construction is anticipated to be completed in summer 2026," Browne said in April 2025 after the council approved two professional services agreements totaling $234,900 with Kimley-Horn and Associates Inc.

Kimley-Horn's contracts covered project management, construction documents, bidding and construction-phase services. The work was funded through the city's fiscal year 2024-25 capital improvement project budget.

The renovation grew out of a park master plan the council approved in 2022, which prioritized resident-requested improvements to parks, trails and amenities. In January 2025, Browne described the city's approach to park planning, saying the goal was to provide different experiences based on community needs.

The $2.36 million total project cost exceeded the roughly $1.6 million in sports fields and drainage improvements described in the April 2025 council agenda. The full breakdown of the additional costs was not detailed in available city records.
