Katy ISD students will get five days off in October for what a student newspaper called the district's first fall break in more than a decade.
The Katy ISD Board of Trustees voted Jan. 20 to amend the 2026-27 instructional calendar, adding a fall break from Friday, Oct. 9, through Tuesday, Oct. 13. The break covers three weekdays plus a weekend. It pushes the last day of school to Wednesday, May 26, 2027, an early-dismissal day.
The board acted after what the district described as extensive community feedback, including a survey of parents, students and staff, according to Covering Katy. At the same Jan. 20 meeting, trustees adopted the 2027-28 instructional calendar, which also includes a fall break, running Oct. 8 through Oct. 12, 2027.
The 2026-27 calendar totals 172 days of instruction and builds in enough minutes to cover two bad-weather make-up days. The district said its calendars meet the state-required minimum of 75,600 operational minutes. Elementary and junior high campuses operate 437 minutes per day, while high school campuses run 447 minutes per day.
One other change: the early graduation option for seniors was removed from the 2026-27 calendar.
The school year began Aug. 12. Some students are already weighing the trade-off between mid-semester rest and a longer year. Sophomore Daniel Angulo Manrique told The Nestline, a Katy ISD student newspaper, that he welcomed a chance to reset but questioned whether the break was worth the extra days tacked onto May. He noted the break includes a weekend, limiting the actual time off.
"The break is not that good because it's not really a full break since it includes a weekend, so there is no point in getting it if we have an additional five days because of it," Manrique told The Nestline on Sept. 4.
Freshman Yusuf Zeitouneh told the same paper that the time off would let him see family and catch up on homework but could knock him off track academically. He suggested a spring-semester break would make more sense because the fall already has several days off built in.
Katy ISD is not alone in the shift. Axios Houston reported that Cypress-Fairbanks ISD also added a fall break for 2026-27, running Oct. 12 through Oct. 16.
The fall break begins Friday, Oct. 9. Families can find the full calendar on the district's website.
