Karen Paxton hit 500 career victories as a head coach on Thursday, Aug. 13, a milestone reached during the opening week of Katy High School's 2026-27 volleyball season.
Katy ISD Athletics announced the achievement on X, congratulating Paxton as the Tigers hosted a tournament at Katy High School with matches against Cypress Park, Deer Park and Tomball.
The specific match that produced win No. 500 was not identified.
Paxton leads a UIL Class 6A Region III District 19 program that has been a perennial playoff contender. The Katy Athletic Booster Club describes her as having been at Katy High School for more than 50 years, a tenure that spans the program's modern era of deep postseason runs.
The pace of her recent success tells its own story. Katy ISD Athletics marked Paxton's 450th career win on Sept. 19, 2023, after a victory over Huffman on Sept. 1 of that year. That's 50 wins in three seasons.
The district's volleyball talent runs deep this fall. The Texas Girls Coaches Association's preseason Class 6A poll, released July 8, ranked Seven Lakes seventh and Tompkins eighth in the state. Katy was not among the preseason top 10 but opens the season with a 500-win head coach at the helm.
Katy opened the 2026-27 campaign on Tuesday, Aug. 11, hosting Langham Creek at 5:30 p.m. The Tigers' Thursday tournament slate featured Cypress Park at 10:15 a.m., Deer Park at 12:45 p.m. and Tomball at 3:15 p.m., all at Katy High School on Highway Boulevard.
