Spectators Bar & Grill is offering a free appetizer voucher to customers who donate five or more school supplies at its week-old Katy restaurant, part of a "Pencils and Purpose" drive that runs through Saturday, Aug. 15.

The drive collects supplies for neighborhood schools during Katy ISD's first week of classes, according to a Katy Times report published Thursday, Aug. 13. All donations stay local.

Owner Aneal Mohammud opened the 275-seat sports bar at 25140 Kingsland Blvd., Suite 1000, on Aug. 5. It is the locally owned chain's fourth Houston-area location, joining two in Sugar Land and one in Richmond. The Katy restaurant fills the former Scholars and Scoundrels space.

Items on the most-needed list include pencils and pens, glue sticks, spiral notebooks, crayons and markers, folders and binders, backpacks and hand sanitizer. Cash donations are also accepted and will go directly to local schools to buy whatever supplies are still needed.

"Katy has a strong sense of community, making it an ideal place to continue growing the Spectators brand," Mohammud said at the restaurant's Aug. 5 opening. "We want to create a neighborhood destination that offers all the excitement of a great sports bar while still feeling comfortable and welcoming for families."

The supply drive is running at all four Spectators locations. Walk-ins are welcome, though the restaurant says reservations are strongly encouraged. The Katy location can be reached at (281) 505-1409 or at www.spectatorsbargrill.com.

Katy ISD students started classes Wednesday, Aug. 12, giving families two more days to drop off supplies before the drive ends.
