Speeding killed 1,247 people on Texas roads in 2025, and the Texas Department of Transportation brought that message directly to Katy drivers on Friday, July 24, with an interactive safety exhibit set up in the Buc-ee's parking lot at 27700 Katy Freeway.
The "Be Safe. Drive Smart." exhibit featured virtual reality games, safety quizzes and videos urging motorists to slow down and match their speed to road conditions, according to the Katy Times. It was part of Operation Slowdown, a statewide enforcement campaign that ran Saturday, July 18, through Sunday, Aug. 2, during which law enforcement agencies across Texas increased patrols and wrote citations targeting speeding drivers.
The Harris County Sheriff's Office confirmed its deputies participated, posting on Instagram that they were increasing traffic enforcement and focusing on speeding and other dangerous driving behaviors through the enforcement period. Officers also spent extra time visibly patrolling roadways to remind drivers what safe speed looks like, TxDOT said, as reported by ABC 13.
Statewide numbers
TxDOT's 2025 data paints a stark picture. More than 150,000 speed-related crashes occurred statewide, killing 1,247 people and seriously injuring 5,652 others, a TxDOT spokesperson told the Katy Times. Speeding accounts for roughly one-third of all traffic fatalities in Texas.
The 2025 death toll represents a 15% drop from 1,472 speed-related fatalities the year before, according to the San Antonio Report. But TxDOT Executive Director Marc Williams said the problem remains urgent.
"Excessive speed makes any crash more dangerous," Williams said in a press release launching the campaign. "Higher speeds mean less time to react and a much greater risk of serious injury or death."
Local enforcement, no local data
Local numbers remain elusive.
No Katy-specific or Fort Bend County speed-related crash statistics for 2025 were publicly available. Neither the Katy Police Department nor the Fort Bend County Sheriff's Office released statements about their participation in Operation Slowdown or local citation totals.
For scale, the Garland Police Department reported issuing 1,224 speeding citations during the two-week enforcement window, according to the department's official X account.
