Katy-area drivers heading home from Houston on I-10 next weekend will need to plan for a full shutdown of the westbound lanes.
The Texas Department of Transportation will close all westbound lanes of I-10 between Freeport Street and Uvalde Road/Market Street from 9 p.m. Friday, Aug. 14, through 5 a.m. Monday, Aug. 17, according to KPRC 2, which reported the TxDOT announcement on Thursday, Aug. 6. The closure is for asphalt repair work.
The affected stretch sits on Houston's east side, near Exit 779B. Westbound traffic, the direction Katy commuters travel when returning home, will be routed off the freeway at Uvalde Road/Market Street, along the frontage road past Uvalde Road, then back onto the I-10 main lanes.
The closure spans a full weekend.
Timing hits first full week of school
The shutdown falls during the first weekend after Katy ISD students return to class on Wednesday, Aug. 12. Teachers reported back Aug. 3, and with Houston ISD starting classes Aug. 10, traffic on the I-10 corridor between Katy and downtown Houston is building as multiple districts ramp up simultaneously, according to start dates reported by the Houston Chronicle.
TxDOT advises drivers to expect delays and allow extra travel time. The agency has not published specific alternate routes beyond the frontage road detour.
