A woman died and two children were hospitalized after a single-vehicle crash on State Highway 6 near Cairnway Drive in west Harris County on Sunday evening, Aug. 16.
The Harris County Sheriff's Office received a call about the crash at approximately 6:25 p.m., according to ABC13. Investigators said the vehicle left the roadway and struck a concrete pillar in a parking lot adjacent to SH 6.
HCSO identified the driver as Jessica Esparza, ABC13 reported. A 13-year-old boy and an 11-year-old girl were passengers in the car at the time of the crash. Both children were transported to a hospital. Their conditions have not been released.
Esparza was pronounced dead at the scene.
The crash occurred on a stretch of SH 6 that runs through the heart of the Katy area, a corridor used daily by commuters and residents traveling between neighborhoods and commercial centers along the highway. Cairnway Drive intersects SH 6 in an area surrounded by residential subdivisions in west Harris County.
HCSO has not said what caused the vehicle to leave the roadway. The investigation remains open, and the sheriff's office has not announced when additional details will be released. Officials did not say whether speed, weather or mechanical failure played a role.
ABC13 initially reported the crash Sunday night and updated its coverage Monday, Aug. 17, with the identification of Esparza and details about the two children. No other agencies have released information about the incident.
The crash is the latest fatal collision on a major Katy-area roadway this summer. SH 6 carries heavy traffic through west Harris County, connecting Interstate 10 to communities stretching south toward Fort Bend County.
