Katy ISD's football programs are in their second week of scrimmages, and volleyball, tennis and cross country teams are settling into early regular-season play as the district's fall athletics calendar ramps up.

Katy ISD Athletics announced the schedule Monday, Aug. 17, directing fans to Rank One Sports for game times and any changes. The district's 10 high school football programs scrimmaged for the first time the week of Aug. 11, just days after nearly 94,000 students returned to campus on Aug. 12.

Football outlook

Katy enters the 2026 season ranked No. 14 in the Class 6A state preseason poll, according to the Houston Chronicle. Head coach Gary Joseph needs 14 wins to reach 300 for his career, and the Tigers carry a 41-game district winning streak into the fall. The streak dates to 2019. That year, Tompkins, led by Jalen Milroe, who went on to star at Alabama, handed Katy its last district loss.

Katy Freeman adds a new chapter this year: the program plays its first varsity season in Class 5A Division I with 32 lettermen and all 22 starters returning from an 8-2 outlaw-schedule campaign in 2025.

The Tigers' regular-season opener is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 29 against Atascocita at Legacy Stadium at 6:30 p.m.

Volleyball producing early results

Several Katy ISD squads competed at the Katy/Cy-Fair tournament over the opening weekend. Seven Lakes rallied past Brandeis 2-1 (15-25, 25-22, 25-22) on Aug. 16, and Jordan topped New Braunfels Canyon 2-1 (25-11, 24-26, 25-17) the same day, according to San Antonio Express-News tournament results. Taylor split its matches Aug. 15, beating Steele 2-1 (25-17, 25-27, 25-21) before falling to Brandeis and New Braunfels Canyon.

As we reported Aug. 10, the opening week marked the first regular-season action for volleyball, tennis and cross country. Those sports now move deeper into non-district schedules ahead of conference play.
